Free Information/Advice

You can get a lot of information and ideas (including brochures) on legal issues from Citizens Advice Bureau or other community agencies.  If you still have questions, then Baywide may be able to help.

Free Assistance

If you need legal help, you can come to Baywide.  You will have to declare your employment and financial status before Baywide will undertake to act on your behalf.  Baywide must comply with the terms of their charter.  Baywide is funded to provide services to those who cannot afford a lawyer, not people who just don't want to pay for one.

Baywide staff may refer clients to Barristers or Solicitors in the following circumstances:

    1. Clients who would be entitled to a grant of legal aid;
    2. Clients who have their own financial resources;
    3. Baywide staff have no legal expertise relating to the client's legal issue;
    4. Clients who do not accept Baywide's terms of engagement.
    5. A conflict of interest has been indentified.

Free Representation

Baywide staff may agree to advocate for clients who are appearing before the District Court, Family Court, School Board Disciplinary Hearings, Tenancy Tribunal Hearings.  As those matters are often complex and time consuming, staff are likely to request or assist client's to engage their own legal representation.  Baywide staff will endeavour to meet client's expectations, however, staff retain the right to decline or to discontinue acting for a client should unforeseen circumstances arise pertaining to the client or the issue involved, should a conflict of interst be identified, or should Baywide's staff or resources be fully committed.
